The US social media company, Twitter which has about 1.75crore users in India is now challenging the Indian Government. It has a big market in India, yet it is trying to ignore the Indian Constitutions and laws.
Twitter blocked the account of the IT minister of India temporarily for an hour.
On 25th June, Friday, Twitter blocked the account of the IT minister of India, Ravi Shankar Prasad for almost an hour. The reason stated was the violation of Digital Millennium Copyright Act of the USA. Twitter received a notice from the owners of the content and hence removed the content from IT minister's account. This copyright issue in Ravi Shankar Prasad's account arose by sharing a video which contained a song "Maa Tujhe Salaam" sung by AR Rehman.
Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Twitter has violated rule 4(8) of the IT rules of India, as it denied his access to his account without notifying him or providing him a notice before blocking his account.
I want to let you know that:
Ravi Shankar Prasad is one of the most powerful authorities of the present government in India. The Indian Government has given him the ministry of three posts which are the minister of Law and Justice, the minister of electronics and Information Technology and the minister of communications.
The IT minister of India is raising voice against Twitter through his tweets.
On Friday, the US social media company Twitter, restricted his access on his Twitter's account. When he got his access back on his account, he informed the public about this through a tweet in which he wrote that something very peculiar happened with him that day. Twitter restricted his access to his account for almost an hour and the reason was that the violation of DMCA(Digital Millennium Copyright Act) of the USA and subsequently they allowed him to access his account.
He also raised a voice against Twitter through his tweets in which he wrote that Twitter wants to suppress free speech and wants to run its own agendas. And if someone does not tow the line they draw, he will be removed from this platform in a tyrannical way. In simple words, your account will be banned if you don't follow their agendas.
He also stated that it doesn't matter what these social media companies want and what they do, but they have to abide the new IT rules fully. There shall be no compromise on that.
Responding to his tweets, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shashi Tharoor said that the same thing happened with him when he posted a video containing a copyrighted song.
He also said that we will seek a proper explanation for locking his and Ravi Shankar Prasad's account.
The public is preparing a war against Twitter on Twitter.
On the day when Twitter blocked Ravi Shankar Prasad's twitter account, the disappointed public started raising their voice against Twitter on the virtual platform of Twitter by their tweets full of anger. It seemed that they trust their government completely and can't even a word against their government from anyone. On that day, Twitter's dashboard was filled with tweets that were against Twitter and many of the tweets contained a request to the government for banning Twitter in India. Also the public is talking about the nuisance act of Twitter against India that was declaring Ladakh as a part of China.
The people are very indignant from Twitter for this matter. Besides this, the Indian users of Twitter also wrote in their tweets that Twitter hasn't adopted the IT rules yet and very few actions were taken by Twitter for abiding the new rules made for social media platforms in India.
Some are saying that what Twitter had done was wrong, it should not block the account of the IT minister of India. Deleting the content would not be a serious issue.
Some others are saying in the favour of Twitter also.
The leaders of opposition parties are also tweeting on this matter. They are saying that the same thing happened with them also when they shared a post which violated the DMCA, but now why everyone is becoming serious if it happened with the IT minister.
Is Twitter working against the Indian Government and India?
Other than blocking the account of the IT minister of India, Twitter has also bothers with the Union Government for many reasons. Some of them are:
Twitter hasn't yet complied with the new IT rules which would be adopted till May26.
The government has asked Twitter for taking action against the accounts' users who were sharing toolkits and were making conspiracy against the Indian Government.
Twitter displayed the geolocation of Ladakh as a part of China and took many days to rectify the error.
The government asked Twitter for banning those accounts through which wrong messages were sent during this pandemic situation.
These are many other reasons also for the problems between the Union Government and the social media giant Twitter.
